Ingrown toenail surgery

In-growing toenails are painful and troublesome. There are two surgical options for the permanent removal of an in-grown toenail.

What are the *options*?

Ingrown toenails are characterised by a spike of nail that becomes embedded in the skin at the side of the nail, causing redness, painful swelling, bleeding and sometimes infection.

Partial nail avulsion is recommended for painful ingrown toenails. The nail spike is removed from the skin and the side of the nail to leave a neat edge, and a chemical is applied to the nail bed to prevent re-growth in that area.

Total nail avulsion is often recommended for thick, painful, discoloured, damaged or fungal nails. The toenail is removed and the same chemical is applied so the nail cannot re-grow and become ingrown in future.
